The project combined conventional historical methods of source criticism with artistic methods of remixing and composing with graphic scores. To prepare the mixtapes, the project leader in the course of one or several online meetings discussed archival recordings with collaborators. Collaborators developed ideas for their mixtapes, for which they sometimes used their own archival recordings or made new recordings. A sound artist and sound engineer assisted the collaborators in the making of the mixtapes. Once the mixtapes were completed, the project leader conducted an interview with the collaborators during which they reflected about the process of making the mixtapes. For the production of the graphic score, the project leader collaborated with an experienced composer, Cara Stacey, and visual artist, Talya Lubinsky. During several online meetings, the three researchers and artists established a common ground by defining the skills and contributions each one wanted to bring to the project. The lead for composing was with Stacey, while the lead for design was with Lubinsky. Lubinsky drew a first version, which Stacey tested together with a fellow musician. Lubinsky then refined the graphic score. Stickers representing different musical elements were added as a tool that allows performers to adapt the visual score according to their own interpretation.
