Population, unit of observation

The ÜGK/VECOF/COFO 2023 aimed to assess educational outcomes among students in their 11th year of schooling (HarmoS) under the Swiss curriculum. The target population comprised approximately 85,000 students from 1,500 schools, including private institutions following the Swiss national curriculum. Schools delivering foreign curricula or instructing in non-national languages were excluded. Special education schools were also omitted due to methodological constraints. Exclusion criteria for students were limited to cognitive or functional impairments or insufficient proficiency in the language of instruction, while academic underperformance or disciplinary issues did not constitute grounds for exclusion.
