Method description

Mixed methods

Method (instruments)

Population, unit of observation

Respondents from TREE2 (age 20/21) and one of their parents. Whenever possible parents were interviewed twice. For information on the TREE2 survey procedure see TREE-Study-Design (https://doi.org/10.23662/FORS-DS-1255-1).

Participant selection or sampling method (census, random sampling, other sampling method (specify))

Respondents from TREE2 who had been successful against the odds at the end of compulsory schooling and one of their parents. The notion of ‘success against the odds’ was defined as parents who 1) are of modest social origin (lower socio-economic status and non-tertiary educated) and 2) whose child has attended an advanced or high requirement track at the end of lower secondary education. The selection criteria are described in detail in the Technical Report.
